This article can be read in about 8 minutes.

“I’d like to go for a short drive today.”

If that sounds like your mood, we recommend the Kisarazu area in Chiba, which is easily accessible from Tokyo.

Just cross the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, and in just half a day, you can enjoy stunning scenic spots surrounded by the sea, expansive coastal views, and delicious seafood.

In this article, we’ll introduce a half-day driving itinerary starting from Tokyo, based on a route we actually took.

Enjoy the downtown harbor scenery at Shinagawa Pier

Our first stop was Shinagawa Pier.

With its massive containers, constant stream of trucks, and rows of port facilities, the scenery offers a slightly different atmosphere from the Tokyo you usually see.

In the morning and evening, the area takes on a distinctive industrial landscape—a spot where car enthusiasts will find themselves wanting to snap a photo.

From here, we head toward the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line.

A panoramic view of Tokyo Bay from Umihotaru

Umihotaru is a marine rest area located along the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line.

Umihotaru is an artificial island floating in Tokyo Bay, offering a 360-degree panoramic view from its observation deck. It’s a popular spot where, on clear days, you can even see Mount Fuji and the Tokyo Skytree.

While it’s perfect for a break during a drive, it’s so charming that it’s worth visiting as a destination in its own right.

The view of Tokyo Bay, enjoyed while feeling the sea breeze, is truly exceptional.

Experience a tropical vibe in Chiba-for-nia

After leaving Umihotaru, head to the area known as “Chiba-fornia.”

The coastal road lined with palm trees creates an atmosphere that feels just like driving along the California coastline. Chiba-fornia is a popular photo spot on social media, and you can also enjoy views of Tokyo Bay from the nearby Sodegaura Seaside Park.

While it’s famous as a spot to photograph your car, please be mindful that street parking is prohibited in the area, so let’s all enjoy it while respecting the rules.

“Ikikitei,” a local conveyor-belt sushi restaurant

The Kisarazu area is home to many renowned seafood restaurants, but unfortunately, I didn’t have time to stop by any of them this time.

Among them, the one I’d definitely like to visit next time is Ikki-tei.

It’s famous for “hamayaki”—where you can grill fresh shellfish and seafood yourself—and is known as a must-visit spot on any drive through Kisarazu.

Enjoying seafood while gazing out at Tokyo Bay would have been the perfect way to round out this trip. Next time, I’d like to stop by there along with Chiba California and the Meiji Centennial Memorial Observation Tower.

Enjoy the spectacular views from the Meiji Centennial Memorial Observation Tower

Next, we visited the Meiji Centennial Memorial Observation Tower.

This uniquely shaped observation tower stands at the tip of Cape Futtsu and offers a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay.

With its incredible sense of openness, the sweeping view of the sea and sky is one of the highlights of a drive through Chiba.

On a clear day, you can see all the way to Kanagawa on the opposite shore.

Wrapping up the trip at Cafe Route 66

Finish off with a break at Cafe Route 66.

The café’s American-style ambiance pairs perfectly with Chiba-for-nia and a drive along the coast.

Taking a moment to reflect on the day’s drive over a cup of coffee is another one of the joys of the trip.

On the way back, take the Aqua Line again, and you’ll be in Tokyo in no time.

Summary

This route goes like this:

Shinagawa Pier → Umihotaru → Chiba California → Sushi Lunch → Meiji Centennial Memorial Tower → Cafe Route 66

That’s the whole flow.

Since you can enjoy this trip in about half a day even with a round trip from Tokyo,

  • If you want to go for a casual drive
  • If you want to tour scenic spots in your own car
  • If you want to relax while looking out at the ocean
  • If you want to experience a sense of escape on a date

this is the perfect course for you.

If you’re unsure what to do this weekend, why not cross the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line and head out for a drive along the Chiba coast?
