Located in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, the Metasequoia Avenue is a beautiful 2.4 km long avenue of approximately 500 metasequoia trees that line the road on both sides. Located along the road leading to the Makino Plateau, this avenue of metasequoia trees shows different expressions throughout the four seasons. In autumn, the vivid autumn colors are especially attractive to visitors. In winter, the trees are covered with snow, creating a fantastic view. The scenery is in harmony with nature, making it a popular spot for driving and strolling.

Shirahige Shrine

Shirahige Shrine is a historic shrine located in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, with the symbolic Otorii (Grand Gate) standing in the middle of the lake. Located on the shore of Lake Biwa, it is considered one of the oldest shrines in Japan. The Otorii gate is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, and is a popular photo spot.   • From Kyoto/Osaka: From the Kyoto-Higashi Interchange on the Meishin Expressway, drive north on the Kosai Road and Route 161, and arrive in about 40 km (about 50 minutes).
  • From Tokyo/Nagoya: Take Maibara JCT to Hokuriku Expressway and get off at “Kinomoto IC”, then drive National Routes 8, 303, and 161 to arrive in about 50 minutes.

Parking

  • There are parking spaces for approximately 50 standard-sized cars, but they may become full during busy times.

Precautions

  • When crossing Route 161, please do not cross the road as it is dangerous due to heavy traffic.
  • When photographing the torii in the lake, please use the observation platform “Ohmi Shirahige-dai” in front of the shrine office.

  1. Exit at the Otsu IC of the Meishin Expressway and proceed along Route 161 (Lakeshore Road).
  2. from Otsu IC, turn right following the sign for Biwako Valley and follow the road.
  3. on the way to Biwako Valley (summit), you will climb a steep mountain road. To avoid making a wrong turn, follow the signs along the way.

Approximately 20 minutes from the Otsu IC to Biwako Valley.

Parking

Free parking is available at Biwako Valley, but early arrival is recommended as it can be crowded.

Ukimido (Mangetsu Temple)

Ukimido (Mangetsu-ji Temple) is a historical hall that stands floating on Lake Biwa in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Officially called Mangetsuji Ukimido, it is known as one of the “Eight Scenic Views of Omi,” or “Falling Geese in Katada. Built in the Heian period (794-1185), the hall juts out over the lake, offering a beautiful view of the lake and mountains. The temple is beautiful in every season, especially at dusk, when a fantastic atmosphere envelops the visitors. The place, with its quiet and sacred atmosphere, is well-loved by those who seek peace of mind.

  1. Exit the Otsu IC of the Meishin Expressway and take Route 161 (Lakeshore Road).
  2. Drive north on the lakeshore road along the western shore of Lake Biwa, and you will arrive near Ukimido. Ukimido is located near the lake and has a large parking lot, so please follow the signs along the way.
